Young fish can be combined in almost any community aquarium. Adults are extremely intolerant and aggressive to others of their own species but they can be kept with other quiet species. They will eat soft-leaved plants so it is best kept them in a tank with large stones, bogwood, and sturdy plants such as Java ferns and Anubias. Good filtration is necessary. It feeds on plants and tiny invertebrates. It uses the headstanding position when feeding. Likes algae, spinach, broccoli leaves, lettuce, fruits, vegetable flake food,
plants, worms, crustaceans, aquatic insects, insect larvae, and crustaceans. Aquarium breeding is difficult and little is know about it.
The male has a bump under the belly. They can live as long as 14 years.
